Direct Metro link between Delhi and Greater Noida cleared

The Greater Noida authority in its 114th board meeting Friday approved a 14km Metro link that will directly connect the national capital with Greater Noida, via the Blue Line (Dwarka to Noida Electronic City).

The link will branch out from Botanical Garden Metro station and end at Noida’s Sector 142 Metro station of the Aqua Line. Although the link will be part of the Delhi Metro network, it will be built by the Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) and funded by the Noida authority.

“Our objective in approving this link was to provide direct connectivity between Delhi and Greater Noida. As of now, the Aqua Line connects Noida with Greater Noida, but there is no direct connectivity between Greater Noida and Delhi. The new link will cut travel time and provide relief to commuters,” Anup Chandra Pandey, chief secretary of Uttar Pradesh, who is also the chairman of the Greater Noida authority, said.

The 14km link will run parallel to the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, once it branches out from the Botanical Garden Metro station. The Botanical Garden station will also serve as an interchange station, linking commuters to Blue Line and the Janakpuri West-Botanical Garden corridor. This interchange station currently bears a load of 1 lakh passengers daily, said officials.

“The Botanical Garden to Sector 142 Metro Link will provide additional connectivity between Delhi and Greater Noida. The existing connectivity via Aqua Line connects the central part of Noida and takes longer to reach Delhi. But once this new link becomes operational, reaching Delhi from Greater Noida will be easier as it will cut travel time,” Pandey said. The board has authorised the Noida Metro Rail Corporation to prepare a detailed project report for the link. The NMRC owns 29.707km Aqua Line.

“The NMRC will prepare the detailed project report and economic feasibility report for this link. As per the estimate, we would need Rs1,500-2000 crore to build this project,” Pandey said.

The Greater Noida owes Rs 5,000 crore to various government agencies, including the Noida authority and banks. “We do not have funds to build this project and we would request the Noida authority to fund this project as it falls in its jurisdiction,” Narendra Bhooshan, chief executive officer, Greater Noida authority, said.

Aviation Hub at Jewar

GREATER NOIDA: An aviation hub will also come up near the proposed Jewar airport

and a project report has already been submitted by Ernst & Young, the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority said on Friday. The move is significant as the airport

is expected to start with an annual passenger handling capacity of 60 lakh when it opens by March 2023. The aviation hub will primarily cater to business and leisure travellers, officials said.

Arunveer Singh, CEO of YEIDA, told TOI, “The government is developing the Jewar

International Airport. So, we have decided to develop a city with proper eco-system in the airport’s neighbourhood. This will be a kind of aviation hub that will sync with the international airport. This will be based on clean and green energy. We are currently studying the report’s findings.”

Officials said Ernst & Young also conducted a study of the world’s leading airports, including Istanbul airport in Turkey and Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands, and incorporated the findings in the project report. “This aviation hub will be a place where people would not need to take out their private vehicles to travel. We will develop a good public transport system which people will prefer to take. There will be proper entertainment and leisure facilities as well,” Singh said.

The report also mentions Singapore’s Changi Airport that has a butterfly garden on its campus and is widely appreciated by flyers to the Southeast Asian country. Some airports like Incheon International Airport in Korea is located on an island where people visit, stay a few days, and return. “While Jewar does not have a coastal area

, YEIDA is exploring other options to attract flyers,” the CEO said.

Some projects like golf course, leisure park, musical water fountain, skill development centres are also under consideration in this aviation hub. YEIDA will form an internal committee to further study this report and also seek expert opinion before implementation of the project, Singh added.

The government is likely to float a tender and hire a developer for the Jewar airport once the model code of conduct is lifted. The UP government has notified 1239.14 hectares in the six villages for land acquisition in the first phase. There are 8,971-project affected families whose either farming or residential land have come under this project.
