Samsung inaugurates worlds largest Mobile factory in Noida

HIGHLIGHTS
Facility in Noida will allow Samsung to make phones at a lower cost
It was inaugurated by PM Modi and South Korean President Moon Jae-in
Samsung also plans to export India-made handsets
Samsung Electronics on Monday announced the opening of what it said is the world’s biggest mobile phone manufacturing facility as the South Korean tech group seeks to expand production in the world’s fastest-growing major mobile phone market.

The facility in Noida will allow Samsung to make phones at a lower cost due to its scale when other phone making hubs such as China are getting more expensive, analysts who track the sector said.

The factory, inaugurated jointly by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, will also help Samsung to compete with rivals such as China’s Xiaomi, which became India’s biggest smartphone brand by shipments earlier this year.

Samsung, which has been assembling phones in India since 2007, also plans to export India-made handsets, the company said in a statement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has imposed taxes on imports of key smartphone components as part of a plan to encourage electronics manufacturing in India which would boost growth and create millions of new jobs.

While Modi’s ‘Make in India’ campaign is still a long way from delivering on ambitious job promises, the programme has had some success with the phased manufacturing of mobile devices and components. More than 120 local factories currently assemble mobile phones and accessories like chargers, batteries, powerbanks and earphones in India, according to tech research firm Counterpoint.

Samsung said last year it will spend Rs. 49.2 billion ($716.57 million) over three years to expand capacity at its Noida plant.

The new facility will help Samsung double its current capacity for mobile phones in Noida to an annual 120 million units after the phased expansion plan is complete, the company’s statement said.

Yamuna Authority on Tuesday after its top officials held a meeting with representatives of Shapoorji Pallonji construction firm

“The proposed city would be world-class in all respects. People living in the neighbouring areas, whose land would be

Singh said Shapoorji Pallonji had expressed interest in developing the city. “The company representatives said that they have
experience in building diverse civil and structural engineering infrastructure projects like stadium, auditorium, airports, hotels,
hospitals, townships, etc. We will look into their proposal,” he said.
On the sanctioned Jewar airport, Yamuna Authority officials said the Union environment and forests ministry had approved the
techno-economic feasibility report. The ministry has put the report online for 45 days, seeking objections to the project,
following which the environmental clearance will be granted.
Sources told TOI the bidding for Jewar airport may take place in a month or two.
On June 22, the Uttar Pradesh government’s multi-disciplinary expert group held deliberations over the social impact
assessment (SIA) report on the Jewar airport. The experts discussed the issues in the report in details and asked the SIA team
to further study and elaborate on the social and economic impact of people who would be affected in the project.
The SIA team has also been asked to study further about case-wise, religion-wise, gender-wise, income-wise, etc and submit
another report which will be looked into at another meeting that will be held on J

Adani Group to set up multi-modal logistics park, airstrip along airport site in Jewar

The YEIDA has asked the Adani Group to submit a detailed project report, along with the 10% of total project cost, to begin the next step of the land allotment. On February 22 this year at the UP investor summit, the group signed a memorandum of understanding with the state government for the investment.
Adani Group representatives on Thursday met Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) officials to buy 2,500 acres of land for its logistics project.

The Adani Group is planning to set up the ‘Adani Multi-modal Logistics Park’ at Jewar along the 165km Yamuna Expressway that connects Greater Noida to Agra. It had, on February 22 this year at the UP investor summit, signed a memorandum of understanding with the state government for the investment. The group wants to start work on the project in 2018-19.

“Today the team from the Adani Group discussed project details and land allotment, including when they would set up the project. The Adani Group will invest ₹1,000 crore, excluding the land cost. We have asked them to deposit 10 per cent of the total project cost to begin the allotment process,” said Arun Vir Singh, chief executive officer, YEIDA.

The Adani Group’s plans for the state-of-the-art multi-modal logistics park include warehousing, cold storage facilities, and an investment in container rakes and an airstrip.

“They want to buy land in sectors 10, 11 and 12 near the site of proposed Jewar airport,” said the YEIDA CEO.

The YEIDA has asked the Adani Group to submit a detailed project report, along with the 10% of total project cost, to begin the next step of the land allotment. “Once the group deposits the money, we will call them for an interview before finalising the land allotment. The logistics park is expected to create 2,500 direct and indirect jobs in this region,” Sigh said.

The Union civil aviation ministry on June 24, 2017 had given its approval for building an international airport in Jewar. Subsequently, the YEIDA in November, 2017 had selected Singapore-based Pricewaterhouse Cooper (PwC) as consultants for the Jewar international airport project. The PwC, on March 16 this year, submitted its draft of a techno-economic feasibility report (TEFR) for the airport project.

“The airport project has helped us lure investors. Since the announcement of the airport project, many corporate houses and investors are exploring investment opportunities along the expressway,” said another YEIDA official.
